  • Premium Home Improvement Tools: This miter saw table gauge helps you make accurate and repeatable angled cuts
  • Versatile Woodworking Tool: Saw accessory has a brass pin that lets you make quick changes between stop angles
  • Accurate Measuring Tool: Miter saw guide has 5 positive stops; vernier scale aids adjustments to 1/10 of a degree

When it comes to achieving microscopically precise cuts, no miter saw gauge on the market right now can outdo the Kreg Adjustable Miter-Gauge.

This “zero-calibration” miter gauge has stops at all the popular angles, i.e. 0°, 10°, 22½°, 30°, and 45°. Moreover, it has 1/10° markings on its Vernier scale so extremely precise angle cuts can be made.

And thanks to its long (24”), anodized-aluminum fence and stop combination, you can conveniently make the same cut again and again without adjusting anything.

The bar is 3/8” thick and 3/4” wide, and since there are five bar adjusters you can easily eliminate play in the miter slot; all you need is a screwdriver.

It also utilizes a precision lens cursor with a highly visible red line so setting the swing-stop is both easier and faster.

The swing-stop locks into place just by turning a nob, and its curved foot makes it possible to move the swing-stop without disengaging it.

Lastly, it weighs 6 lbs, is 25.25” x 2.63” x 6.25”, and comes with a decent limited warranty.

What I Liked:

  • Extremely precise Vernier scale allows for a range of angled crosscuts & bevel cuts
  • Heavier components give it decent stability and a quality feel
  • Easy to adjust miter slot allows for more precise cuts
  • Stops at common angles are firm to ensure smooth cuts

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Doesn’t have a telescoping fence to accommodate wider materials
  • Can be expensive than other miter gauges

My Thoughts

If it had more range, I wouldn’t hesitate to call the Kreg Adjustable Miter-Gauge the best miter gauge you can buy. Its precision is unmatched and a streamlined design makes it pretty easy to use. All the components utilized are quality and the workmanship is terrific. And whereas other miter gauges are difficult to adjust, this Kreg miter gauge takes no time to adjust, and it locks firmly in place once adjusted. So if you need to make expert miter cuts routinely, I would highly recommend this Kreg Miter Gauge.

  • White-on-orange markings are difficult to read in both bright and dim areas

My Thoughts

If an affordable miter gauge with a superior locking system is what you’re after, look no further than the INCRA MITERV27 Miter V27 Miter Gauge. Its simplicity makes it easy to use, and its durability ensures it’ll stay in place when engaged. Plus, the few additional components it employs come in handy when its time to make miter and bevel cuts. Of course, the absence of an expandable fence limits its capacity, but this isn’t a big deal if you’re not using this miter gauge for larger woodworking projects.

And to ensure comfort and control, it has a large grip. To ensure stability, there are play-eliminating screws, and there’s a tip-resistant washer.

The aluminum head and solid steel miter bar make this tool more stable as well, and they also ensure it won’t be inoperable if dropped or dinged.

My Thoughts

If you use saws, sanders, and routers made by different brands, the POWERTEC 71005 Deluxe Table Saw Miter Gauge may be ideal for you, since it offers superior compatibility along with accuracy, durability, and convenience. It’s also relatively cheap when compared to similar miter gauges, yet it’s still capable of delivering stability and precision with each use. Plus, the locking system is reliable, and even after months of use it remains smooth. With more components, it’d give the first miter gauge on this list a run for its money.

What to Consider When Purchasing a Miter Gauge

Accuracy

When you’re in the market for a miter gauge, accuracy should be regarded as the most important facet.

After all, a miter gauge is a measuring tool, so above all else it has to be accurate.

And since this tool is often used in conjunction with cutting, accuracy is essential, as you may not have a chance to fix a mistake once you start cutting.

The best miter gauges employ a range of components to enable precision measuring.

For example, the Incra Miter 1000 (the best miter gauge on my list) has a telescoping fence, a miter bar with six expansion points, and a stop-fence positioner, all of which enable not only precise measuring but faster and more convenient repeat cutting as well.

Some miter gauges only go up to 45° on both sides, but the top-quality models designed for contractors extend 60° to the left and right.

Here’s an example of the miter gauge that came with my SKIL table saw. It’s not the best quality so I highly recommend picking up an aftermarket one.

Stock Miter Gauge on SKIL Table Saw

And in between each degree, on a high-quality miter gauge, are fractional markings.

Lastly, miter gauge accuracy is in large part determined by its stability and the quality of its locking system, but more on these two points later.

Durability

Durability is another important aspect to consider, since durability in part ensures accuracy.

Miter gauges that are made of heavy-duty materials, like stainless steel and solid aluminum, won’t wear down as easily, meaning they’ll provide precision for longer.

Miter gauges that are made of comparatively weaker materials wear down quicker and become less precise as they degrade.

Plus, if you drop or ding a low-quality gauge, there’s a chance you could cause damage which makes it inoperable.

Therefore, it’s best to stick with miter gauges made of heavier metals, as these hold up well over many years if properly maintained, and they can usually withstand even significant impacts.

Stability

Stability and accuracy go hand in hand. That is, if a table saw miter gauge isn’t stable, chances are it’ll have a hard time being accurate.

Once again, we see why miter gauges made of heavier materials are ideal.

More weight means less chance of the miter gauge shaking when engaged, which is good since even a slight bit of shaking can cause the measurement or cut to be off by as much as a whole degree.

The miter gauge should also be 100% on the table surface when in use, otherwise it won’t be able to deliver max precision.

Price

The best miter gauges are going to run you $150-$180, while the most affordable (yet still good models) are $50-$75.

The price of a miter gauge is largely determined by the materials it’s made of, the components it utilizes, its capabilities, and its brand.

If you’re not going to be making miter cuts in large materials often, you don’t need to spend top dollar on a stock miter gauge; these are mainly used by professional woodworkers.

Convenience

It’s not enough for a miter gauge to be accurate. It needs to be easy to use as well, otherwise you’ll struggle to achieve precise measurements, which most woodworking projects require.

The POWERTEC 71005 Deluxe Table Saw Miter Gauge, for example, has an ergonomic grip so the miter gauge is easy to adjust, while the Incra Miter 1000 and Kreg Adjustable Miter-Gauge have adjustable miter gauge fences to ensure stability.

How to Use a Miter Gauge

Square Crosscuts

Set the gauge to 90° (or 0° depending on how your table saw miter gauge is marked).

Make sure the table saw is unplugged before raising its blade as high as it will go.

Now slide the miter gauge forward until its front edge is in line with the saw blade.

Place one edge of a 6” combination square against the blade, and either perpendicular edge against the front edge of the miter gauge. Perfect alignment on both edges means you’re good to go.

Now pull the miter gauge back (towards you) and place the workpiece against the gauge’s front, flat edge.

Indicate where you want the cut.

When you’re ready, turn on the saw and slowly slide the miter gauge forward. As you approach the blade, make sure the board is firmly against the gauge’s edge.

Once the piece passes through the blade, you’ll have your crosscut.

Angled Crosscuts (Miter Cuts)

Making angled cuts with a miter gauge is somewhat easier, since all you have to do is set the miter gauge to 45°; there’s no combination square required.

But when you’re making miter cuts, you should move the wood slower, since it’ll try to move more when being cut at an angle.

You can use a small woodworking clamp to secure it.

Moving slow is also important because you’ll be cutting against the grain, and moving the piece slowly reduces the chances of edge tearing.

Miter Saw Gauges: Table Saw vs Miter Saw

Miter Saw

The key difference here is that table saws require a miter gauge attachment while miter saws include these.

You could argue that a fixed miter gauge is more stable than one that has to be attached, but the difference is truly negligible.

Final Thoughts

To recap, the best miter gauge overall is the Incra Miter 1000 because it’s equipped with numerous components that ensure accuracy, durability, versatility, and easy operation, yet it’s priced much lower than other top-tier miter gauges.

In terms of best quality, the Kreg Adjustable Miter-Gauge owns that title because of superior workmanship and because it employs high-end components to deliver extremely precise measurements.

And last but not least, the Precision Miter Gauge owns the “best value” spot on my list because it costs of fraction of what other quality miter gauges do yet it’s accurate, well-designed, and built to last.
