Storing Baby Clothes KonMari Style

Today I’m showing you my method of folding and storing my son’s baby clothes KonMari style. This folding method is helping me organize the mountain of baby clothes my son has outgrown and I think it can help you too!

One of my 2019 Home Project Goals is to clean and organize all of the closets in the house before the end of the year. Knowing the state of my closets, it’s a daunting task. But I’m trying to do a little bit at a time so that hopefully it will be done quickly and painlessly. 

I got a start on my son’s closet by finally sorting through and packing away his baby clothes. I’ve always folded his clothing in the style Marie Kondo explains in her book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. This folding method makes each piece of clothing into a little square. It saves tons of space and makes it easy to see each piece of clothing so that you don’t have to dig through the drawer to find what you’re looking for. 

Marie Kondo calls her style of tidying up the KonMari method. It’s popularity has recently re-surged with her new show on Netflix, ‘Tiding up with Marie Kondo.’ It is a systematic way to clear through the junk in your home by taking each item you own and asking yourself, “Does this item spark joy?” If the answer is no, toss it. Unless it’s your washing machine. No joy coming from that thing, but you probably want to keep it.

So, before we get started, this is only part of the pile I was dealing with. I had shoved everything into vacuum seal bags about a year ago, plus more piles in our spare bedroom as my son continued to outgrow clothes. These bags are great for storing bulky blankets or pillows, but baby clothes… not so much. They seemed like a good idea when I purchased them, but they take up a ton of room and are so floppy and heavy that it was impossible to stack them nicely in my son’s closet. They would work much better for storing under a bed. 

I opted to purchase some clear plastic bins this time around so I can stack them in the corner of his closet. Also, so that I can keep clothes sorted by size which will make my life so much easier down the road when I need to unpack them.

Sort by Size

First, I dumped out my giant bags of clothes and sorted everything by size. I wish I had taken pictures of the mountains of clothes. How can tiny clothes take up so much room?!

Sort Keep, Donate & Throw Away Piles

Next, I went through each size and sorted clothing into keep, donate and throw away piles. Clothing that was badly stained or worn beyond wear went into the throw away pile. Clothing that I didn’t feel sentimental about or just didn’t really like went into the donate pile and everything else into the keep pile.

Decluttering can go a long way in making your drawers organized!

Folding Baby Clothes KonMari Style

Get to folding girl! If you’re like me and decided to keep 90% of your kiddo’s baby clothes, this is going to take a while. I started with the biggest size clothing and put that on the bottom of a bin and worked my way up to smaller sizes. That way if I need to unpack bins for a future baby the smaller sizes will be right on top and I can work my way down to bigger sizes. 

I created some graphics to show how I fold baby clothes into neat, little KonMari squares. Hopefully this helps you! The result is so satisfying.

You will probably, definitely get sentimental at this point. How was my baby ever this small??

I didn’t create a graphic for folding onesies/body suits, but it is the same idea as folding the footie jammies. If you’re having trouble with folding onesies, let me know in the comments and I’ll create a step-by-step graphic for those as well.

Stack in Bin

Stack clothing vertically in your bin so that you can see everything. You can fit SO MUCH this way! Once you complete a layer, start adding another.

I didn’t add anything between my layers, but if you wanted to separate them you could lay a thin blanket, like a receiving blanket in between. I wouldn’t recommend using paper or cardboard because they will leave your clothes smelling musty over time, especially if you live in a humid climate.

Aren’t those teeny, tiny folded squares so nice to look at? 

I’m so glad that I FINALLY got to work on organizing my son’s closet and dealing with the piles of clothes. I still have lots more to do, but I’m counting this as a little win today.
